"Cosina Cameras"
Cosina Company Ltd
(Tokyo & Nakano City, Nagano, Japan)

A prolific producer of cameras, mostly for house brands. The company was founded by Mr B. Kohayashi in February 1959 as a lens factory. The Nakamo factory was established in January 1968. Its products were 35mm cameras, lenses for cameras and projectors, and machined and moulded parts. The following month the Obuse factory was established for glass melting and pressing. The Iiyama factory was established in December 1972. This plant made 35mm camera lenses, other lenses and lens polishing, and eventually LCD projector engines. March 1980 saw the opening of the Nanase factory which made over the years various lenses, dichroic prisms, mirrors, 3CCd prisms, and mechanical moulding of parts. A research and development division was started in October 1987. In February 1989, Mr Hirofumi Kohayashi was inaugurated as the second president, taking the reins from his father who had founded the company. Production of Voigtlander Bessa brand camera bodies and lenses began in April 1999. April 2000 the marketing Division and R&D divisions were combined as Cosina Marketing Research and Development Division. In February 2002, the four factories combined as one company under the "Cosina" banner.
