Austral No 3 A large box camera, 8 1/2 X 7 X 4 1/4". It is of the "falling plate magazine" type, so called because it held 10-12 individual plate or sheet film holders in "magazine" inside the camera, and as each exposure was made, a lever was pushed and the plate fell to the floor of the camera, leaving the next one in place for the next picture. This one has 10 plate holders, and it all works. A simple T & I shutter, and 3 apertures on a slide. The camera is badged an Austral No 3 Registered. It is serial # 231009 for those who need to know such things. Austral was an early Kodak Australia brand, but this camera was probably sold by Baker and Rouse, a photo chemical manufacturer who were the sole distributors of Kodak goods in Australia at the turn of the 20th century. The camera is more than likely made by Houghtons in the UK, and rebadged here by B&R. Made of cheap leather/material covered wood, these cameras are now scarce, and rarely found in working order. ~ The cosmetics of the camera are good. Still has its original carry strap, the metal viewfinder surrounds are tarnished, and the covering needs a clean. There are a couple of small bits of covering missing from the bottom rear of the camera, but these are not noticeable on display, and are small! There is light rust on the inside of the camera surface. All the internal metal parts are uncoated, except for the actually film holders.

Stock No 2401
Kodak Six-20 Popular Brownie Made in the mid 1937-40 by Kodak Ltd in the UK. While not a common camera, it could not be considered rare. What is very hard to find is one of these in this sort of condition. They are made mainly of stiffened cardboard and some wood. Made very cheaply and to a price, they were not what you would call robust, and most have succumbed to the rigors of time. ~ This one is LOVELY. All the leatherette covering is complete and unshrunken. There is barely a mark on it and it is still shiny. The cardboard body is not warped or torn and even the corners are still square and not worn through. Still has original carry strap, also in exc condition. The brushed chrome surrounds of the ground glass viewfinders are spotless. There is the beginnings of corrosion on the very cheaply nickelled clasps and winding knob, but those on this camera are in much better shape that you normally see. The paintwork on the ID plate around the lens and the actual black lens surround is spotless. The carry handle posts are exc,. There are a couple of very minor scratches on the shutter protection black and chrome plate. Inside the camera looks like it has had very little use. A truly lovely example of a cheaply and rather poorly made camera so it would sell cheaply THEN. But this one has made it through till now still in better than exc condition. Asking Price $45.00
